Faculty Guide to Library Resources

WHAT ARE LIBRARY RESERVES?

Professors may place various items (library-owned or personal copies) on reserve for a limited checkout period in the Library.

Reserve items are for checkout by students.

The Evening Supervisor, Katie O'Connell, is responsible for the main desk reserve area.

COPYRIGHT IMPLICATIONS

Copyright guidelines impose certain restrictions on photocopies placed on reserve. The guidelines below need to be followed by any faculty member placing copies on reserve:

  1. It is the responsibility of the faculty member to be aware of the policy as stated in the campus Copyright Policy found on p.69, item 4.3 of the Faculty Administrators Handbook found in TNU4U. Waggoner Library reserves the right to refuse to place copies on reserve if the request, in its judgment, violates copyright law.
  2. A professor’s single, fair-use copy of an article may be placed on reserve.
  3. Multiple copies may be placed on reserve, which conform to the guidelines set forth under “Classroom Copying with Respect to Books and Periodicals (see campus Copyright Policy). The quantity placed on reserve is limited to 5 copies of an article and nine articles per course. The Library may impose further limits if quantity is deemed unreasonable or unnecessary.
  4. The copies on reserve shall be identified as belonging to a faculty member and include a complete citation and copyright notice (library can supply the copyright notice
  5. Copying the material shall not adversely affect the market for the work.
  6. The copy should be free of charge except for the actual photocopying charge.

THE PROCESS

  • Faculty may place print items on reserve in the library by the form attached or pick up a form at the appropriate circulation desk.
  • All requested titles will be pulled from the shelves and placed on reserve.
  • It is helpful if reserve requests are submitted BEFORE the beginning of the semester so that any library copies can be pulled before students return.
  • A barcode label and security strip will be placed on all personal copies for security purposes.

Online course reserves

Most of the library online resources include a 'persistent link'. Sometimes called a durable link, stable link, or permalink. The persistent link is a URL linking users directly to the resource found within library databases or other resources.

Faculty are able to include the link in the course syllabus, weekly readings, or specific assignment instructions. Students then are able to locate the specific resource required for the assignment. No copyright concerns with this method.
