Questions about Library Staff: What To Do

What do you do when someone comes in the library and asks about a particular librarian/staff member?

1. Find out more

  • Try to find out more about why they are asking, if possible.
  • "Is Prilla expecting you for an appointment?"
    • Examples: a meet with a librarian appointment, they got good help from that person before, they are a salesperson/vendor, they are a friend, etc.
      • Based on the answer, try to judge whether they really need to see a specific librarian or not. Appointments, yes... they got help from that person before, maybe not.
      • Refer them to the librarian working at the reference desk or the librarian on call, if it seems appropriate.

2. Call the librarian

  • If they still need to see a specific person:
    • Ask their name, then call the librarian's office and ask the librarian to come down to meet them.
      • "May I please have your name so that I can let Lanette know who is here to see her? I will call her to ask her to come meet you."
    • A list of office phone numbers is at the circulation desk.
      • There may be times that the librarian does not answer. In that case:
        • Do NOT give out office locations/room numbers.
          • If the person already knows where the office is, you do not have to stop them from going there.
        • Do NOT give out any schedule information.
        • Do NOT give out cell phone numbers.
        • You can give out a librarian's office phone number and/or email address, or business card, for the person to follow up later.

What if someone asks about another student worker?

  • Do NOT share information about fellow student workers' schedules, phone numbers, etc.
    • Even if you think this is a friend.
    • "I'm sorry but I can't share information about Jane's schedule. Do you want to talk to my supervisor?"
In all cases, do not hesitate to loop in the Circulation Supervisor or the librarian/staff member at the desk/on call.
