Orientations are a great starting point to engage with library users whether they are studying online, in-person, or hybrid.

Library orientations can be created and implemented to fit the program or course format.

Options listed here can be used as stand-alone sessions or blended or even mashed up to create a multi-part library orientation. The goal is to create an orientation that will best meet your students’ needs.

Click the tabs to learn more, and then reach out to your liaison librarian to make this happen.

Type: Program Orientation Video

About:

These can be created in various platforms that allow a student to meet their liaison librarian, see how to use the primary library resources, and get general information needed to take advantage of library resources and services.

Length:

It is self-paced. Could take 30 min to 1 hr for completion.

Delivery:

A link to the orientation video can be placed in a blackboard assignment.

A suggestion for the language of the library orientation assignment:

  • Get acquainted with your library by watching this online orientation created by your librarian [name of program liaison librarian]. Click the link to begin. The orientation is self-paced. Take your time to learn how Trevecca's library can help you succeed in this program!
  • Insert Link to the library orientation
  • The last page of the online library orientation has a link to take a short quiz over the content just viewed. This serves to reinforce what you have learned about the library. It is completion based, not graded.

Example:

Type: Interactive Online Tutorial

About:

These can be created on various platforms that allow students to move through instructional information in a series of lessons. These have to be completed in one sitting. Strategic placement of learning questions aiding in student understanding and retention can be inserted. However, there is no way to aggregate those scores into an actual graded assessment.

Length:

Student completion will vary because they are self-paced, but typically, the completion time frame would be approximately 1 hour.

Delivery:

A link to the video tutorial can be placed in a blackboard assignment.

An Idea for language for the assignment:

  • Get acquainted with your library by completing this interactive online tutorial. Click the link to begin. The average time of completion is about 1 hour. It may take you less time or a bit more. Just pace yourself so you learn the most. This must be completed in one sitting. Unfortunately, the platform does not have an option to save a draft.

  • If you need help with the video tutorial, please reach out to Librarian Prilla Speer at pspeer@trevecca.edu.

Example:

Type: Virtual - Teams, Collaborate, Zoom

About:

This would be a virtual online orientation session with a librarian hosted by a faculty member or program director. This works well especially for online or hybrid programs. The liaison librarian would lead the orientation sharing the screen to show library resources and links to services. A live session is an opportunity for students to ask for more information and go deeper as needed.

Length:

30-45 minutes

Delivery:

A link to the meeting could be placed in the Bb course, or sent via course announcement.

Idea for language for the assignment:

  • In this course, you will need to use the library for research. Learn more about the library resources and services this Tuesday during our weekly Zoom meeting. Librarian [insert name] will be joining us to share essential information about using Trevecca's library to find books, articles, citation help, and more. The meeting will be recorded for those who cannot attend.
  • Insert Link to the meeting

Type: Blended

Program Orientation Video or Self-Paced Video + Virtual

About:

After viewing the recorded program orientation video or completing the self-paced video a librarian could join the class using Teams, Zoom, or Collaborate. This would give students an opportunity to meet their librarian and ask questions.

Length:

15 min. (not counting the time for the orientation video)

Delivery:

The program director or professor will identify the date/time. The librarian would join via the link sent by the program director or professor to the virtual meeting. The session could also be recorded for those who were not able to attend virtually.

Idea for language for the assignment:

  • In this course, you will need to use the library for research. Learn more about the library resources and services by viewing the Library Orientation Video linked here [insert link].
  • As a follow-up, this Tuesday [insert day] during our weekly Zoom meeting, Trevecca librarian [insert name] will be joining us to answer your questions about the library.
  • Insert Link to the meeting

Type: In-Person

About:

For the programs meeting f2f or hybrid connecting with a librarian adds value by being welcoming and supportive. These students can take advantage of the physical library.

Librarians will rotate leading these sessions based on the day/time requested. The time is dependent upon the faculty member's teaching schedule.

Length:

30-45 minutes

Delivery:

In-person in the classroom or if it is preferred, the session could take place in the library.
