Assignment assessments in Canvas require students to complete some type of work.

The assessment for an assignment is based on submitting either the work done or proof of completion into the assignment for grading. Here are two options for an assignment assessment.

 Type: Quiz Link

Students complete an online quiz that is only accessible from the final section of the online orientation. Only the online library orientation URL is used in the assignment instructions. The quiz resides outside of Canvas. A quiz can be created using LibWizard (a library resource) or Google Forms, which assesses student learning after completing the online library orientation.

Details:

  • The program director or a faculty member will determine when and where the assignment will be included in Canvas.
  • Librarians create the 10-question quiz based on the online library orientation content.
  • The quiz will reside outside Canvas, with the link only accessible from the final page of the online library orientation.
  • Students can see questions missed and edit those to achieve a perfect score.
  • There is no limit on retakes and unlimited use of orientation resources to help with responses.
  • Grading is based on completion, not a score.
    • Proof of Completion - Students must submit a screenshot of their score results or a PDF of the review/score page (there is a link to generate a PDF on the quiz review page) to the Bb assignment for grading.

Assignment: Library Orientation

Learning about the library, resources, and services has been crucial to student success. Hess et al. (2015) reported that "the ability to navigate through exponentially increasing amounts of information and non-information to meet both professional and personal information needs is a critical skill for an educated workforce and an educated populace" (p. 624). This assignment will introduce you to Trevecca's library to learn more about using its resources and services most effectively. You may want to take notes as you go through the orientation.

  • Submit the PDF or screen capture as evidence of completion.

Type: Reflection

About:

A 150-word [chose the word count] reflection about what they learned or want to know more about after completing the library orientation.

Details:

The reflection would be added to the orientation instructions for grading.

One idea for language in Canvas:

After completion of the library orientation, write a 150-word reflection answering the following questions:

  • What surprised you?
  • What do you want to know more about?
  • How does this change your perception of research support?

Type: Discussion Forum Assessment in Bb

About:

The Library orientation could be set up as a discussion forum. The orientation element would be the source of the discussion.

Delivery:

Create a discussion forum for the Library Orientation assignment.

One idea for assignment text:

Instructions:

Begin by completing the online library orientation linked here - insert the link

Attach the Certificate of Completion found at the end of the orientation as proof of completion. Then, write a discussion post:

This assignment invites you to explore the library as a treasure trove of tools, not just a repository of books. Choose three library services or resources that you believe hold significant potential for enriching your graduate work. These could be anything from online databases specific to your field to workshops on academic writing to one-on-one consultations with librarians.

For each chosen resource, answer the following questions:

  1. Describe the service or resource in detail. What is it? What does it offer? How can you access it?
  2. Explain how this resource could be specifically beneficial to your graduate research. How does it address your research needs or challenges? How could it enhance your findings or methodology?
  3. Go beyond the surface! Share your thoughts and expectations about using this resource. Do you have any concerns or potential difficulties you foresee? How do you plan to integrate this resource into your workflow?

Bonus points:

  • Highlight a hidden gem! Did you discover a lesser-known resource that deserves more recognition? Share your find and explain why it's worth exploring.
  • Think creatively! Go beyond the usual suspects. Can you envision a unique way to utilize a specific resource to push your research further?

Remember, your goal is to demonstrate a critical understanding of how the library can empower your academic success. Be specific, insightful, and persuasive!

Due [?]

Response posts: Respond to two peers, a minimum of 150 words.
