This is a database of published books that have been scanned by Google and made available in Google search results or from the Google Book site. More than seven million books are online either entirely if in the public domain or as excerpts if copyrighted.

The core works and authors listed on this site were taken from some of the reading lists which are indexed on the site -- the Great Books Foundation adult reading program, the reading list in the back of How To Read A Book (Mortimer Adler's classic text on intelligent reading), the Great Books of the Western World collection, and the Harvard Classics series. This site can be browsed chronologically, by author or title.

Thousands of open-access ebooks are available from top scholarly publishers, including Brill, Cornell University Press, De Gruyter, and University of California Press. Users won’t need to register or log in, and there are no DRM restrictions or limits on chapter PDF downloads or printing. Ebooks work just like journal articles on JSTOR.
