Rachelle Dekker and her young adult novel series "The Seers". The Choosing.

Trevecca alumnus, Class of 2008

Rachelle dropped in to visit with one of our YA Book Clubs Thursday night. They had just completed reading The Choosing. Wonderful conversation,  sharing, and good time.

Thank you Rachelle for taking the time to come and inspire our students!

Rachelle Dekker is many things. She is a daughter, a sister, a wife, a writer, a friend, a cat lover, and a believer.

However, these are all just roles and though she loves these roles very much, who she truly is cannot be fully addressed because that is something she is still discovering.

Of course, self-discovery is a constant journey where hard questions must be asked but Rachelle knows two things for certain. First, that she is no different than anyone else, because in the deepest place in every person’s heart there is fear, doubt, stress, pain, worry, sorrow, joy, thankfulness, peace, love, success, and happiness. Second, Rachelle knows that she is loved perfectly and wholly just the way she is. Loved in a way that, while may not make sense to many, is wonderful and fulfilling. In a world filled with people searching for worth, acceptance, and a place to belong, she has learned that in searching for these things, she is worth the world, accepted long before she went looking for it, and she belongs right where she is at this moment.

Rachelle continues her never-ending journey and invites you to join her. Whether you are already diving deep or still standing on the shore the journey is going to be wild. There may even be some water walking.

Rachelle's first novel, The Choosing, was given the Christy Award for Best Young Adult Novel, 2016. She graduated Trevecca in 2008 with a degree in English.

About the book: Like all citizens since the Ruining, Carrington Hale knows the importance of this day. But she never expected the moment she’d spent a lifetime preparing for―her Choosing ceremony―to end in disaster. Ripped from her family, she’ll spend her days serving as a Lint, the lowest level of society. She knows it’s her duty to follow the true way of the Authority.

But as Carrington begins this nightmare, rumors of rebellion rattle her beliefs. Though the whispers contradict everything she’s been told, they resonate deep within.

Then Carrington is offered an unprecedented chance at the life she’s always dreamed of, yet she can’t shake the feeling that it may be an illusion. With a killer targeting Lints and corruption threatening the highest levels of the Authority, Carrington must uncover the truth before it destroys her.
