PRAXIS Exam

The Praxis tests measure the academic skills and subject-specific content knowledge needed for teaching. The Praxis tests are taken by individuals entering the teaching profession as part of the certification process required by many states and professional licensing organizations.  Praxis Series tests are required by the State of Tennessee for initial teacher licensure.  Required tests for Music Education candidates

  • Praxis® Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core) tests - required if minimum ACT or SAT scores not met
  • Praxis® Subject Assessment
    • Music: Instrumental and General Knowledge (5115) OR
    • Vocal and General Knowledge (5116)

edTPA

Developed by faculty and staff at Stanford University, edTPA is a performance-based, subject-specific assessment and support system used by teacher preparation programs throughout the United States to emphasize, measure and support the skills and knowledge that all teachers need from Day 1 in the classroom. This assessment features a common architecture focused on three tasks: Planning, Instruction, and Assessment. Aspiring teachers must prepare a portfolio of materials during their student teaching clinical experience.
