Discovery Search: Finding Journal Articles

Watch this short video to learn how to use Discovery Search to find journal articles.

Note: Discovery is a good first start but databases are will provide better quality results.

Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL)  https://tntel.info/

TEL is available to all citizens of Tennessee. All Tennessee public and private educational institutions have access to TEL databases. This includes TN K-12 schools throughout the state.

As future educators it is vital you know you have this incredible resource in your school. Your school librarian can assist with training and guidance as needed. Many of these databases are Gale products and part of the Waggoner Library A-Z Database collection.

Selected TEL databases especially useful to educators from TEL are linked below

Topic Finder

A cool interactive visual search tool in TEL/GALE databases is the Topic Finder. This tool takes the titles, subjects, and approximately the first 100 words from a subset of your top results and feeds them into an algorithm. Keywords shown in the graphics are those found most often in the text with your search term. Click the terms to narrow. Articles show on the right. Below is the result of searching the term schools in Information Science & Library Issues database. Give it a try!

Library Databases

All library databases are linked within the library A to Z Database page.

Other Specific Education Databases

These are databases from ProQuest and EBSCO about education related issues and topics.

Waggoner has both online and print newspaper subscriptions.

Print newspapers: Located on the main floor rotunda area, the Newspaper Nook provides a relaxing place to sit and read current issues of the following newspapers - Tennessean, USA Today, Wall Street Journal and Nashville Business Journal. Online access to some content is available in the library only. Please ask at the reference desk for help.

Online access for newspapers: The following databases provide current and full text backfiles of local, national, and international news. Major newspapers such as the New York Times are included.

Learn more about the library newspaper collections here or click a title below to search a collection.

What if an article does not have full text?

1. Use the E-Journals by Title search - This identifies if the library has the journal article. If we do have the full text, it provides a database link to access the full text. Steps to follow:

  • Copy the article title
  • Click the link to the E-Journals by Title search under the Find Information area on the library homepage.
  • Click on the 'Search Tab'
  • Paste the article title into the related search box.
  • If it is available, you'll see links to a database(s). Be sure you check the date ranges.
  • If it is unavailable, you'll see a link to submit a request for the article - an Interlibrary Loan (ILL).

2. Journal Article requests can be made through the Interlibrary Loan link on the library homepage

  • Use if you cannot find the full text from the library
  • Complete the form, and submit it. There is no cost for this service!
  • The article reprint will come as a PDF to your email on average in two days.

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a cooperative effort between many libraries around the world to provide articles, books, and other materials to researchers, students, and others. ILL is offered through Waggoner Library for currently enrolled Trevecca students and current Trevecca employees.

Making an ILL Request

You can request items online through interlibrary loan in one of two ways:

1. Find the item in Discovery and click on its title to view the details. There will be a purple 'Request Item through Interlibrary Loan' button that you can click which will attach the item's information to your request, so that you don't have to type it out.

2. If the ILL request button for a title in Discovery is unavailable, use our online interlibrary loan form (you will need to type in the item details)

Important Notes:  Your Trevecca email and the 11-digit Campus ID number from your ID card are both required on all ILL requests. Contact the library if you do not have your 11-digit campus ID number.

If you have questions or need assistance, please call the ILL office (615-248-1338) or email us (ill@trevecca.edu)
