Library instruction sessions are customized for each individual class and research assignment, and may include topics such as:
Why should I incorporate library instruction into my class? Don't students learn this elsewhere?
Many professors, instructors, and adjuncts find that investing an hour of class time in a library instruction session results in better student work. There's no guarantee that students receive library instruction in other courses due to AP, CLEP, and transfer credits. Other students come to the library as juniors or seniors with little recollection of how to use a database or find a book, even if they attended a library instruction session previously. Reviews are always helpful, especially since Waggoner is constantly updating our resources. If you would like to discuss how library instruction can be incorporated in your busy syllabus--and why it could be useful--please contact our Instruction and Serials Librarian, Lanette Strickland, at LRStrickland@trevecca.edu or 615.248.1548.
How can I help ensure a successful library instruction session for my students?
Make sure that your students understand their research assignment before the session. Schedule the session within two weeks of a final due date (or one week before a rough draft due date) to make the session more relevant and applicable to students.
How far in advance should I request a library instruction session?
At least two weeks' notice is preferable, though shorter requests may be granted based on availability. It is typically not possible to accommodate requests of 48 hours or less since each session is tailored specifically to your class.
Do I need to attend the session?
Yes, if at all possible. Your presence conveys the value you place on developing strong library research skills. Your students will pick up on this. When you attend, you can actively participate in the session by asking questions, interjecting information, and encouraging your students to be present. We realize that your attendance is not always possible but it is highly encouraged.
Where are the sessions held?
We have a dedicated library instruction room on the main floor of Waggoner, room 135, with a capacity of 26 students. Desks are moveable and can be arranged in various configurations for both individual and group work. Laptop computers are available for students to borrow during the session.
Who will teach my library instruction session?
Lanette Strickland is the primary librarian responsible for undergraduate instruction, but all professional librarians participate, particularly in their assigned liaison areas and with graduate-level instruction. All librarians have earned Masters of Library Science or Masters of Information Science degrees. Some librarians also hold additional degrees at the masters or doctoral level.
What if I teach online?
We can still provide library instruction for your class! Please fill out the session request form and we can discuss our options.
