Job Openings

Applications for library student workers will be taken through Handshake, a job website for college students. Applications are currently closed. This page will be updated when applications are open.

Spring Library Student Assistant position on Handshake. Job applications for Spring 2025 closed at 11:59pm Tuesday, December 3rd. 

Waggoner Library is seeking to hire ~2 students to work beginning January 7, the day before classes start, for around 9-13 hours/week. Interviews for Spring positions will be conducted in December, virtually via Microsoft Teams. Please read the Handshake description thoroughly for details.

Application Process

  1. When applications are open, interested students should log in to their Handshake account (or create one) and follow the link above to the job listing.
  2.  After reading the job description, applicants will click "apply" and complete any questions.
  3. The library requests each applicant's resume, and schedule of availability for the following semester (including classes and other ongoing commitments). A cover letter is not required, but is welcome if an applicant wishes.
  4. Library supervisors will review applicants and invite selected students for an interview.

Preference may be given to students who live locally, and/or who are willing to work during school breaks.

Library Student Assistant Job Description

Purpose/role of the position within the organization:
  • To support the Circulation Supervisor and other library faculty and staff with various projects and circulation support
  • To provide excellent customer service as the first point-of-contact most patrons have with the library on the phone and at the library services desk.
 
Duties and responsibilities associated with the position and how they relate to the purpose/role:
  • Perform basic circulation desk duties including: checking items in and out, assisting patrons with simple technology needs, giving directions to various library locations, referring more complex research questions to the circulation supervisor or librarian on duty, and answering the telephone.
  • Shelving books; locating and pulling books for holds; straightening shelves.
  • Assisting with laminating; simple cleaning of high-use items and surfaces; checking and replacing paper and supplies; cleaning and straightening of circulation and study room spaces.
  • Running campus errands, assisting with other library (circulation, cataloging, archives, statistics) projects, collection money for fines, prints and laminating.
 
General qualification for the position and the specific qualification for the levels/rates of pay associate with the position:
  • Undergraduate student at Trevecca.
  • Attention to detail, punctuality, knowledge of Microsoft programs and basic computer use, strong interpersonal skills, and a pleasant attitude.
  • Students must exhibit excellent customer service skills, and the ability to perform quality work under minimal supervision.
  • Prior library experience and knowledge of the Library of Congress system is not required, but is preferred.
  • Students have access to a handbook, take part in supervisor-led training during the first 2 weeks of work, and sign a disciplinary contract. Students who receive FWS are eligible for this position, but it is not required.
 
The length of the student’s employment:
  • Students are employed for one semester and continue for as many semesters as they adequately perform their duties, and adhere to library policies and procedures.
  • Students may work up until the summer after graduation after which point they are no longer eligible for on campus student employment.
  • Hours start at orientation day which is always the day before classes begin in the given semester. Official semester hours end the last day of exams. Summer workers are chosen from a pool of current library student workers. Summer workers begin the first day after exams and continue to the day before classes begin.
 
Evaluation procedures:
  • Students meet with supervisor on an as-needed basis to discuss job performance. Students are evaluated each semester with a mid semester review in advance of their final evaluation. Continued employment is contingent upon evaluation results. In the event that a significant performance issue arises, students will first meet informally with the circulation supervisor to discuss the issue. If problems continue the student will then meet with the library director.
 
Schedules:
  • Generally, students work anywhere between 5-16 hours a week based on their schedule and hours available in a given semester.
  • Sunday-Friday shifts usually do not change after a schedule is made, except days on/around holidays, breaks, and finals, when the library’s hours may be shorter or longer. Students are informed ahead of time when these changes will affect their schedule.
  • Saturdays are worked on a rotation; an individual student may work 2-5 Saturdays a semester. Rotating shifts are available for sign-up during orientation. All students must work some Saturday shifts.
  • Work schedules are made each semester based around classes and other school commitments. Care is taken to consider students’ other commitments, but then schedules are assigned such that the circulation desk is covered during all hours that the library is open.
  • Hours are spread out evenly among student workers unless schedules prevent even distribution or students express a desire to work more or fewer hours. Waggoner Library is open 80-90 hours per week during regular semester and 65 hours per week during the summer; students staff the desks all hours the library is open.
